Marine Sciences is one of the most popular departments at UNE –With good reason! UNE’s faculty is engaged in cutting-edge research in the field. Our Marine Science Center provides state-of-the-art facilities for marine education. Graduates work in aquaculture, aquariums and other marine environments and have attended prestigious graduate schools such as Scripps Institute of Oceanography. UNE is situated on the Saco River estuary between Portland, a major seaport and center of commercial fishing, and Kennebunkport, a classic Maine village, as well as a center for lobstering, fin fishing and whale watching.

“What will I learn in the CME Program?”

You will study marine habitats: salt marshes, barrier beaches, rocky coastlines and open ocean. You will discuss important topics of ecological concern, such as local endangered species and pollution. You will learn about marine ecosystems in the field and in the lab. You will take a close look at everything from the microscopic phytoplankton to the mighty whale. You will become familiar with laboratory, field and research skills required of any science major. You will take exciting trips, meet new people and make lasting friendships!

Field Trips & Research Activities

Cruise the Saco River Estuary on a research vessel.
Participate in a plankton tow.
Complete biological surveys at the rocky intertidal.
Join a whale watching boat out of Kennebunkport.
Observe seals and birds native to southern Maine.
Collect / identify marine & freshwater specimens.
Browse the Portland Waterfront & the “Old Port.”

Dorms and Dorm Life

Dorms are close to your classes and to the dining hall. This will be a good opportunity for you to experience dorm life and a roommate. Rooms include two desks and two beds with linens. A dorm counselor/teaching assistant will be in residence with you.

Much of your weekday evenings will be spent with homework and projects, but there will be plenty of opportunities to socialize and explore the area. You will have access to UNE sports & leisure facilities, including our six-lane pool, weight room, basketball courts, and sandy beach and kayak launch! Other leisure activities include movies, campfires and cookouts.

Tuition and Related Fees

Tuition: $1,170 for 10-day academic program (Includes instruction and lab, field trips and extra-curricular activities)

A limited number of highly competitive merit scholarships are available for qualifying students. Applicants should note on their application that they wish to be considered for a merit scholarship, and may add a short statement explaining their need for support, but awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and achievement.

Room and Board

$740 - Double Room
(12 nights lodging. Meals begin with dinner on Sunday evening, and end with lunch on the last Friday of your program.)

Commuter student lunches: $160 for 2 weeks

Total Cost

Resident: $1,910 Commuter: $1330

(If accepted into the program, a deposit of $100.00 is required to reserve your place in class. The balance is due June 1, 2013.)
