Dr. Lara Carlson is currently an Associate Professor in the Westbrook College of Health Professions at the University of New England (UNE). She received her Bachelors from Southern Connecticut State University, her Masters from the University of South Dakota, and her Doctorate in Exercise Physiology from Springfield College. Prior to her UNE appointment, she was an Assistant and Associate Professor at Castleton State College in Vermont for seven years. Outside the classroom, Dr. Carlson was an U.S. ranked hammer thrower in Track and Field, qualifying and competing in four USA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Carlson was also a Scottish Highland Games competitor. While at South Dakota and Springfield, she coached several NCAA All-Americans in various Track and Field throwing events. At Castleton, she served as the strength and conditioning coach for men's ice hockey where she coached several players to earn the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete recognition. Dr. Carlson has also gained experience working in strength and conditioning with NASCAR pit crew athletes at Hendrick Motorsports.
Dr. Carlson is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA. Recently, she has been elected President of the American College of Sports Medicine New England Chapter (NEACSM) for an unprecedented second term, and she is a current member of the NEACSM Board of Trustees. In 2011, Dr. Carlson was the recipient of the Honor Award which is the highest honor bestowed by the NEACSM. Carlson also holds an United States Department of Veterans Affairs faculty appointment.
Her primary research interests include the effects of exercise on inflammatory and immune responses, and the gene expression analysis of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells following resistance exercise. Dr. Carlson also has a special interest in the physiological and thermoregulatory challenges observed in automobile racing. She is married to a great guy (Blair), rescued the best dog (Dakota), enjoys playing the drums, and loves NASCAR!
