Message from the Dean
Welcome to the UNE College of Pharmacy webpage. Even though our inaugural class will not begin the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program until the fall of 2009, we have assembled the information contained on the various pages and links of this site to provide you with insight regarding a career in pharmacy and to learn about the educational opportunity here at UNE.
The Doctor of Pharmacy program, located on our Westbrook College Campus in Portland, will select its students from the pre-pharmacy program offered by the College of Arts and Sciences on our Biddeford Campus as well as transfer students from the national applicant pool. One of the major requirements to be considered for admission to our Pharm.D. program is a strong academic performance in completing the 71 credit hours of coursework detailed in our pre-pharmacy requirements. These requirements vary between colleges of pharmacy, so if you pursue the prerequisite courses somewhere other than our College of Arts and Sciences, and plan on applying to our professional program, please work with your pre-pharmacy advisor to assure you that you select equivalent courses.
The pharmacist is one of the most highly respected professionals in the country. Currently, the vast majority of states are doing their best to address a crisis in our health care delivery system due to a shortage of pharmacists. Maine ranks quite high in its need for pharmacists and although we recognize that not all of our graduates will remain in our state, we believe that our program will definitely make a difference in providing competent practitioners to serve the health needs of our citizens. I hope that one day you might be one of these practicing pharmacists.
Admission to pharmacy programs is very competitive and at UNE we anticipate a high demand for entrance into our four-year professional degree program. Should you decide to pursue a career in pharmacy, I would encourage you to dedicate yourself to your goal by attaining and maintaining a strong academic performance, and becoming knowledgeable about the many opportunities available to pharmacy graduates.
The University of New England is proud of its long history of academic excellence and service to the community. As the Founding Dean of the College of Pharmacy, I am pleased to add to this legacy and invite you to explore all we have to offer as your pursue your career goals.
Best wishes for success!
John F. Cormier, M.S., Pharm.D.
Dean
