At the University of New England, Everything We Achieve Centers on Learning

For students of the 21st century, knowledge and skills must be relevant and applicable in an increasingly complex world. With its diversity of programs poised for more growth, the University of New England has a unique opportunity to build bridges between traditionally separate programs and colleges. We are committed to providing our students with an innovative, interdisciplinary learning experience, where professors and students value critical thinking and collaboration.

Four Strategic Initiatives form the foundation of this commitment:

1: UNE will establish educational programs that bridge traditional academic boundaries to create transformative experiences for students.

2: UNE will have a culture and infrastructure that support students and faculty in research and scholarship.

3: UNE will have a learning-centered environment for active involvement in campus life and community engagement.

4: UNE will optimize University resources and support ethical, effective, efficient and responsible decision-making.

Strategic Inititative #1

UNE will establish educational programs that bridge traditional academic boundaries to create transformative experiences for students.

We are committed to academic excellence and will provide the tools and environment that support it and measure progress toward achievement and continuous improvement. We will link resources across colleges and administrative units to integrate and advance academic programs to a level of national recognition.

Targeted Goal: UNE will establish a Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology

With almost immediate access to a universe of knowledge, students must learn to qualify and synthesize information efficiently and effectively. The Center will be a resource for information and preparation of faculty in advanced and innovative instructional programs utilizing technology for enhanced teaching and learning results. Undergraduate and graduate education will be improved through the Center's focus on the art of teaching and the process of learning.

Targeted Goal: UNE will establish an integrated Center for Academic Health Sciences

With a College of Health Professions, a College of Osteopathic Medicine, and a new College of Pharmacy, UNE is already well known for its programs in medicine and the health professions. The Center will foster interdisciplinary education and clinical practice by implementing successful models for integrating existing and emerging health science education programs with research and service.

Strategic Initiative #2

UNE will have a culture and infrastructure that support students and faculty in research and scholarship.

With the pace of discovery and the body of knowledge increasing exponentially, research and scholarship are crucial to a learning-centered environment. We will support our faculty by establishing University-wide development programs to enhance and encourage research and scholarship. Our professors will foster mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students through creative and interdisciplinary research opportunities.

Targeted Goal: UNE will establish four Centers of Research and Scholarship

We will improve resources and establish policies that enable us to create interdisciplinary centers of research and scholarship excellence with focus areas of national recognition. Researchers will work in collaboration with educators, scholars, clinicians, patients, government agencies, and private companies to address complex societal problems and to find solutions together, with the Centers providing a matrix for coordination of ideas and support.

  • Center for Land-Sea Interactions: Human, River and Ocean Health
  • Center of Excellence in Neuroscience and Pain Management
  • Center for Global Humanities
  • Center for Community and Public Health

Targeted Goal: UNE will establish master and doctoral programs to prepare students centered on interdisciplinary research and scholarship.

Working collaboratively with faculty scholars and scientists, graduate programs will teach students to integrate knowledge across disciplines in order to gain greater insights into the workings of the world, and prepare them to meet the future challenges of society.

Strategic Initiative #3

UNE will have a learning-centered environment for active involvement in campus life and community engagement.

Learning and personal growth thrive in a culture that supports health and wellness of body, mind and spirit, and a commitment to the environment. UNE's positive impact on the region is already felt, and we will continue our socially responsible practices through enhanced programs, services and outreach, while expanding our perspectives to include the global community.

Targeted Goal: UNE will enhance facilities to support the growth of fitness programs and extramural sports, as well as arts, cultural, and recreational activities.

UNE will promote fitness programs, provide more opportunities for participation in athletics and recreational sports, and support programs that value the arts and cultural activities – all for the benefit of students and the local community.

Targeted Goal: UNE will engage a culturally diverse and globally connected community of learners in which all students have the opportunity for international study.

We are committed to creating and celebrating a culturally diverse student body, faculty and staff that values open communication and collaboration. Our students will have access to strong programs in international study, as well as creative opportunities for distance learning and experiential education.

Strategic Initiative #4

UNE will optimize university resources and support ethical, effective, efficient and responsible decision-making.

As part of our ongoing commitment to excellence, we will establish strategic benchmarks for quality and growth, strengthen our governance structures, and establish systems that maximize our assets, resources and personnel.

Targeted Goal: UNE will exemplify its commitment to its communities with master plans for each campus that focus on aesthetics, accessibility to the environment, and student needs.

As we continue to enhance our campuses, we will expand our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development while preserving their natural and historic character.

Targeted Goal: UNE will foster a culture of accountability that utilizes assessment and analysis to support responsible planning and continuous improvement in all academic and administrative areas.

In addition to policies and practices that encourage and support input as well as insight, UNE has created an Office of Institutional Research and Assessment to establish and monitor benchmarks in key areas that will serve as markers for improvement.
