Ivan's research interests focus on the effect of work organization and environment on occupational health. He has consulted for many area companies providing health hazard reviews, corporate training and environmental assessments. In addition, he has published journal articles on engineering and occupational health topics. He is a member of the National Occupational Research Agenda committee on Manufacturing and the Maine Occupational Research Agenda steering committee.

Health literacy, plain language, and clear health communication. The Health Literacy Institute provides plain language consulting, training, and materials development. We work in the public and private sectors, in academia, in public health and medicine, across many health topics and conditions. We publish in peer reviewed journals, contribute to policy, and train at a national level.
Research Interests/ Scholarship
We participate in research projects as plain language experts. We helped develop the first plain language decision aid (for men with early stage prostate cancer) and helped establish international criteria for patient decision support tools.

International health partnerships between Russia and the U.S. which use distance learning and videoconferencing; avian influenza emergency preparedness; identifying indicators associated with adult obesity in rural Maine; identifying stressors associated with smoking among rural mothers in Maine; Eco-Theatre: integrating artistic and cultural expression with research and dissemination; population based nutritional risk surveys and research of the elderly, children under two and pregant women in the former Soviet Union; destigmatizing mental illness using an intervention which integrates the arts; correlates of alcohol and drug use among HIV-infected individuals; predictors of survival of older men with AIDS; the clinical profile of end-stage AIDS in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy; health promotion of local foods using theatre and the arts; HIV/AIDS educational materials tailored for health facilities in Central Asia; HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, hepatitis C and mental illness among HIV-infected individuals.
