Why You Will Dig the Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgendered, and Questioning (GLBTQ) Services

Whether you are gay or straight, some of the most memorable moments of your life are before you at UNE. Woven throughout those moments, you will meet queer students, faculty, staff, or clients (look at the people around you right now - one in ten of those individuals is gay!). Or you yourself may be negotiating the "rapids" of being gay/lesbian/bi/trans (a.k.a., the BiG QuiLT), or an ally.

For a majority of students, regardless of their relationship to the BiG QuiLT, their comfort level regarding GLBTQ issues and persons will broaden during their years in school. Also, the existence of homophobia and heterosexism prevent our community, and all its members, from reaching their fullest capacities, and especially increases the stress in a gay person's life. UNE has established the GLBTQ Services to assist all students as they navigate these experiences.

The resources available on campus, and locally, can make your experience at UNE richer, and can provide access to support for a variety of issues. So take a moment now to familiarize yourself with the wide range of resources listed in this brochure, then file it away to use later. Just a 30-second glance will reveal that this information will be useful to you - regardless of your sexual orientation! - at some point in your studies at UNE.

Why the GLBTQ Services Will Dig You
The success of the UNE community depends on the active participation of its members: so get involved. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3!

1. Social:
When deciding how to spend all that free time, consider attending a GLBTQ-related event, or help us plan some! Special dates to remember include Coming Out Day (Oct. 11th), and Gay Pride Month. GLBTQ pride is usually celebrated in June, but some campuses (including UNE) celebrate Gay pride in April.

2. Studies:
Include GLBTQ themes in your studies: when choosing a research topic, consider focusing on GLBTQ issues, or, when considering any topic in your field, be sure to include GLBTQ issues in the analysis.

3. Individual Responsibility:
Homophobia and heterosexism hurt us all, please be aware of your role in these two forms of oppression.
