Frequently Asked Questions

Housing Assignment

When do I find out where I will be living?
We will begin making assignments in late June and continue throughout the summer. Housing assignments are based upon the dates we receive your Housiing and Dining contract. For this reason, we encourage you to send this information in as soon as you decide to come to UNE. New students will be sent their roommate information around the second week in July. Please be patient, but feel free to call our office if you have not received your assignment by July 21st.

Will I get my preferred hall assignment?
While we try to accommodate hall requests, not every student will get his or her preferred hall assignment. Continuing students have priority selection in the spring of the previous year. Therefore, some halls fill to capacity sooner than others do. The sooner you turn in your completed application, the better your chances are for getting your preferred assignment.

How do I request a roommate?
On the application, there is a place for you to indicate a roommate preference. However, preferences must be mutual and both applications should be received at the same time, since assignments are based on the date the application is received.

When do I get billed for housing?
Housing charges are applied to your student account once your assignment has been made by our office.  In Mid-June, you will receive a bill from Student Accounts with a default housing charge that reflects a standard double.  The default charge is used to help you financially plan and the actual housing charge will be assessed to your student account once you are assigned.

Changing Rooms

What do I do to change rooms/halls/roommates after I have moved into my assigned residence hall?
Please go to Room Change Process

Facilities: The Basics and the Extras

What is furnished in a typical room?
The room is furnished with two beds, two chairs, two desks, two dressers, closets and fixed lighting.

How will I know what my mailing address will be?
Your mailing address will be indicated on your assignment notice. You will have the university address, followed by a P.O. Box number. Be careful not to confuse your PO Box number with your room number.

How do I make long distance phone calls?
There are two to three active phone jacks per room. All calls on campus are free of charge and can be made by dialing the four digit extension of the person you are trying to reach. To place a call off campus, a calling card is needed. Many students find that a prepaid calling card works fine.

Will I get an e-mail account? Can I access the Internet from my room?
dormroom1Each student is given an e-mail account that is active 12 months/yr. You do not need your own computer to access your email; you can check it from any computer that has Internet access. Some on-campus access points include computer labs, libraries, kiosks, and "plug-ins" for your own laptop. Each residence hall room or suite has one Ethernet port per student to provide them with direct access to the Residence Hall Network (ResNet) and the Internet. The Ethernet network allows each student to send and receive e-mail; browse the World Wide Web; chat with your friends and parents; access the University’s on-line library system; and use U-Online, the University on-line registration system. The University will use campus e-mail as one of its primary means of communicating with students, from important notices about school closings to notes from the faculty. Can I get cable TV for my room? Cable television hookup is provided for you! Each room has one active cable TV line, which provides over 70 channels for viewing. You will need to provide the TV and supply the coaxial cable, which runs from the TV to the wall. If you choose not to bring a TV, each residence hall lounge is equipped with a television and VCR which is hooked to cable.

What should I bring to make my room seem more like home?
Carpets, bedspreads, a moveable light, posters, decorative pillows, plants, are just a few ideas; the list goes on. Remember, there will be two of you sharing the space, so be realistic about what you plan to bring. Due to limited storage space, it is not possible for you to bring your own bed, desk, etc. The following is a checklist of items students usually bring with them:

sheets (extra long twins)
shower basket
blankets
toiletries
bedspread
alarm clock
pillow
radio/stereo
Fan
  area rug
extension cord
laundry bag or basket
waste basket (metal only)
pictures/posters
iron
flashlight
reading lamp(s)

You may want to contact your roommate before you begin packing for school to avoid duplication of items. You may also want to wait to purchase a bedspread and draperies until you arrive so the two of you can agree on a pattern or color. Most windows in the halls have been installed with energy efficient shades which provide privacy, but if you wish to dress up your window, measurements are as follows:

Assisi, Avila, Padua and Siena (University Campus), 74" wide and 60" long   Ginn and McDougall Halls (Westbrook College Campus), 59" wide and 62" long

Frederick Hall (University Campus), 54" wide and 60" long   Linnell Hall (Westbrook College Campus, summer school only), 98" wide and 60" long

Mattresses are oversized twins - 36" X 80". Room sizes are approximately 10'8" X 15'2", but we recommend that you wait to buy carpeting until you see your room.
Most furniture is moveable; beds can either be bunked or lofted, depending upon the hall to which you are assigned.

What should I not bring?
Hot plates, candles, toaster ovens, and items with an open heating element are not allowed in residence hall rooms; there are kitchens available in each residence hall for cooking. Firearms, knives and blades; halogen lamps; and pets are not permitted in the residence halls. Students may bring a small microwave oven and small refrigerator.

Who is responsible for arranging repair of broken windows, clogged drains, etc.?
Students communicate maintenance concerns through the hall staff. Maintenance staff are on hand during the week, and 24-hour emergency service is available during other times.

May I store belongings on campus over the summer?
No, but there are several reasonably priced "self-storage" businesses in town.

Policies

What are the residence hall policies, such as quiet hours, alcohol, drugs and visitation?
A comprehensive list of residence hall policies is included in the Residence Hall Handbook. You may click here to access the University Student Handbook and Residential Education and Housing Handbook online.

Residence Hall Staff

What is a R.A.?
An R.A. is a Resident Advisor; a helper, friend, peer, and good resource for information. The average ratio of R.A.'s to students is about 1 to 30. We encourage you to seek out your R.A. right away for help and information.

What are Professional Staff members?
Professional Staff members are administrators, holding Master’s degrees, who help manage the halls campus-wide. On the University campus, there is a Director of Housing and Residence Life, and four Area Coordinators. These professional staff members supervise the efforts of the R.A.s and offer students a source of close communication with the department of Student Affairs and other offices on campus.
