Abstract: This talk explores the famous and dramatic rebellion by 53 Africans aboard a Cuban slave ship in 1839 - one of the very few such successful revolts in the history of the slave trade and one that had profound consequences in the United States around the Atlantic.

Like snowflakes, no two people are exactly alike, and our self-identities do not always correspond with how we are "read" by others. So how do people assign labels to their complicated and unique experiences? What does the "landscape of identity" look like today? What cultural changes are underway? How can healthcare providers support clients and patients of all gender identities and sexual orientations?
