Job Description: Peer Tutor

Title: Peer Tutor or Graduate Tutor
Department: Student Academic Success Center (SASC)
Supervisor: Tutor Coordinator, SASC

Qualifications

Required:

  1. Peer Tutors must have earned a grade of B or higher in the course(s) which they intend to tutor and have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.
  2. Graduate Tutors must have a Bachelor's degree and must have earned a grade of B or higher or the pass/high pass equivalent in the graduate course(s) they intend to tutor.
  3. All Peer and Graduate Tutors must receive supportive recommendations from faculty in the content area(s) to be tutored.
  4. All new tutors are required to attend tutor training. (Specific times and dates for the tutor training sessions will be announced.)

Strongly Preferred:

Teaching/tutoring experience, particularly in post-secondary courses.

Other relevant work experience that demonstrates either knowledge of the content or the ability to work effectively with students.

Primary Responsibility

To facilitate student learning by (a) helping to clarify specific course content and (b) promoting/modeling the use of appropriate study strategies.

Specific Expectations

  • Tutors must adhere to the tutor guidelines, which are detailed in the Tutor Handbook (e.g., emphasize active learning techniques, practice good “listening” and facilitation skills, model study strategies that can be used successfully in the specific content area, model and promote the importance of using self-monitoring skills).
  • Tutors must meet with their students in the SASC or in other designated or pre-approved areas.
  • Tutors should consult with the student’s professors for advice, guidance and direction in their tutoring work.
  • Under no circumstances should a tutor do a student’s work for him/her! Tutors will not write papers, review books or prepare work for a student. A tutor may guide, direct and offer assistance in organizing a paper, but the student must do his/her own work. The tutor may cancel and/or terminate the tutoring relationship if the tutee presses the tutor to do his/her work.
  • Tutors should inform and/or consult with the director, tutor coordinator, administrative assistant or other SASC faculty if they encounter any problems or need any type of assistance relating to their tutoring situation.
  • Tutors are expected to work cooperatively with SASC staff members to deliver a cohesive program and to respond in a professional manner to diverse student needs.
  • Tutors must maintain scheduled hours. If a tutor is unable to attend a tutoring session, s/he should notify the administrative assistant or the tutor coordinator in advance.
  • Tutors are expected to participate in tutor training sessions and staff meetings, as requested (compensation will be provided).
  • Tutors are expected to respect students’ rights to confidentiality and follow legal guidelines regarding dispersal of information.
  • Tutors are expected to act as a representative for the tutoring program within the campus community.
  • Tutors must submit bi-weekly time sheets to the administrative assistant.
  • Tutors must maintain detailed records and logs to document activities.
