Recycling
The University of New England community has a history of protecting and preserving the environment, and "environmental stewardship" was identified as a core value in the University's new Strategic Plan. One of the University's many programs fostering environmental stewardship is its recycling program. The UNE Environmental Council and Campus Services has implemented a single-sort recycling program on the Portland Campus, working in conjunction with EcoMaine. Although the current recycling program on the Biddeford Campus is limited to cardboard and paper, the University's goal is to implement a single-sort program during summer 2010.
To make these recycling programs a success, the University needs strong student involvement in running the programs. We encourage students in the citizenship program to use their community service hours on-campus with the recycling programs (both campuses have opportunities). We also encourage students to consider the possibility of tailoring their academic internships to work with the recycling program.
