Student Involvement
Student involvement is essential to the success of our recycling program. Students can be involved in a number of ways with the recycling program. Here are just a few of the ways:
Summer and school year Work-Study opportunities are available through Environmental Health and Safety. Tasks include recycling "center" inventory and maintenance, data collection, and recycling program public relations. For more information about Work-Study opportunities in the recycling program, contact Alethea Cariddi at acariddi@une.edu.
"Recycling Internships" are available for credit through the courses listed below, with the Environmental Health and Safety Department and will work closely with the Sustainability Coordinator. Recycling Interns will ensure the success and continuity of the recycling program, a cornerstone to the environmental stewardship movement at the University of New England. Typical activities for this opportunity will include: designing and implementing educational campaigns and publicity materials, collecting recycling program data, answering questions from end-users and helping to maintain recycling "centers" on both campuses.
- To learn more about the Citizenship Seminar and choosing the recycling internship opportunity, contact the Internship Director, Cynthia Simon at csimon@une.edu.
The Environmental Council is charged with increasing awareness and understanding of environmental issues on campus and in our community. The Environmental Council acts in an advisory and advocacy role. The EC meets twice per month during the school year and encourages student involvement. To become a member or attend a meeting, contact co-chairs Neal Jandreau at njandreau@une.edu and Mike Arciero at marciero@une.edu.
The Recycling Committee is an ad-hoc committee of the Environmental Council, charged specifically with promoting and increasing recycling on campus. Becoming involved in the recycling committee will provide on-the-ground experience with the logistics of developing a recycling program. To join the committee, contact Sustainability Coordinator, Alethea Cariddi at acariddi@une.edu.
Earth's E.C.O. (Environmentally Conscious Organization) is dedicated to making UNE an environmentally-sound University through many educational endeavors. It is comprised of students from various majors. Events that Earth's E.C.O. is responsible for includes Focus the Nation, the spring concert; Reduce, Reuse, Rockout, and the Earth Month speaker series in April.
