Student Involvement

Student involvement is essential to the success of our recycling program. Here are just a few examples of the ways students can support the program:

Summer and school year Work-Study opportunities are available through Sustainability and Environmental Health and Safety. Tasks include recycling station inventory and maintenance, data collection, and recycling program public relations. For more information about work-study opportunities in the recycling program, contact Alethea Cariddi at acariddi@une.edu.

"Recycling Internships" are available for credit through the courses listed below. These internships are with the Environmental Health and Safety Department and involve working closely with the Sustainability Coordinator. Recycling Interns ensure the success and continuity of the recycling program, a cornerstone to the environmental stewardship core value at the University of New England. Typical activities for this opportunity include: designing and implementing educational campaigns and publicity materials, collecting recycling program data, answering questions from end-users and helping to maintain recycling stations on both campuses.

The Environmental Council is charged with increasing awareness and understanding of environmental issues on campus and in our community. The Environmental Council acts in an advisory and advocacy role. The EC meets monthly during the school year and encourages student involvement. To become a member or attend a meeting, contact co-chairs Amanda Leen (aleen@une.edu) and Cory Theberge (ctheberge@une.edu).

The Recycling Committee is an ad-hoc committee of the Environmental Council, charged specifically with promoting and increasing recycling on campus. Becoming involved in the recycling committee will provide on-the-ground experience with the logistics of improving the recycling program. While the committee is currently inactive, if you have interest in becomming involved, contact Sustainability Coordinator, Alethea Cariddi at acariddi@une.edu.

Earth's E.C.O. (Environmentally Conscious Organization) is a student club dedicated to making UNE an environmentally aware university through many educational endeavors. It is comprised of students from various majors. Earth's E.C.O. sponsors guest speakers and hosts many activities during Earth Month. To become involved, contact Earth's E.C.O. advisor, Pam Morgan (pmorgan@une.edu).
