Andrew Tenenbaum, DO
“Dr. T.” graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1997 with a double major in Biology and Psycholgy before coming to medical school at University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated with honors in 2003. He worked in a pre-medical internship at Boston Medical Center Department of Pediatrics focused on pediatric medical advocacy projects including adolescent obesity, cultural differences in accessing health care, and spirituality in pediatrics. His love of Maine kept him here for a residency in pediatrics at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at the Maine Medical Center, completed in June 2006. He also served on the Pediatric Critical Care Transport team on Angel One.
He continued his concern for patient advocacy as well. He conducted a study of Somali and Sudanese adolescents in Portland and published a study with colleagues on faculty and resident attitudes about spirituality and religion in pediatric health care. He is also a volunteer at the Homeless Teen Shelter in Portland. In addition to staff priviliges at both Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center, he will continue to serve as a Pediatric Hospitalist at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. In addition, Dr. T. has a strong interest in international medical volunteer work. He worked in the Toledo District of southern Belize in 2005, and plans on volunteering throughout his career.
Throughout his training, Dr. T has always been a teacher. He teaches medical students history and physical exam skills at the Maine Youth Center regularly and helped create a website for a first year biochemistry course including the creation of on-line exams. He will continue to teach UNE medical students on campus in the Pediatric Nervous and Gastrointestinal systems on key topics including pediatric seizures, traumatic brain injury, and head shape deformities. He will also teach Interns at Mercy Hospital about the care of abdominal pain in children, among other topics.
Living in a state as beautiful as Maine – how can you not love the outdoors? In this vein, Andrew’s interest in the outdoors include paddling, fly fishing, hiking, skiing of all varieties, and snowshoeing. In addition, Andrew enjoys running, and can be found on the podium of various road races around the state (not really on the podium, but near it). And most of all, he spends time with his beautiful wife Debra, their newest edition “Eli”, and old companion Gabbro (the dog).
