Karen Weiss, PNP-C

Curriculum Vitae

Karen Weiss, pediatric nurse practitioner, is the newest addition to the University Health Care (UHC) family.  Born and raised in a suburb north of Boston, Karen has spent the past 20 years testing the waters of California’s Bay Area.  There, she received masters’ degrees in public health and public policy from the University of California, Berkeley.   Later, she returned to the University of California, San Francisco’s School of Nursing to become a pediatric nurse practitioner with a specialty in adolescent medicine.

Karen has been caring for patients for the past 10 years.  Her practice includes children of all ages, from infancy through adolescence.  Karen has a special interest in working with teenagers.  “The teen years can be difficult ones, especially for young women.   I am committed to helping teens negotiate the many twists and turns along the road to adulthood.  I try to accomplish this by providing a combination of both practical tools and emotional support.  I offer guidance and resources to parents as well to help them support their teens along the way.”

Karen also loves working with new families, as it was not too long ago that she was starting one herself.  “The joys and frustrations are still fresh – sometimes all too fresh!”

In addition to seeing patients at UHC, Karen also serves as a teacher to UNE residents, medical students and physician assistant students.  Not only does Karen enjoy teaching, but she also finds it is a great way to stay up to stay up to date on the latest in pediatric medicine.

Karen is thrilled to be back in New England.  When not working she loves exploring her new city with her partner and their two little boys.   She has also recently joined the Board of Directors of Add Verb Productions, a Portland-based theatre group that works to encourage dialogue around social issues such as dating violence, bullying and eating disorders.   Karen’s hopes to learn cross country skiing in the near future but in the mean time, her current winter sports - shoveling and the ever popular dressing and undressing small children in layers of snow gear event  -- are serving her just fine.
