UNE's publications awarded American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine honors

PORTLAND, Maine - The University of New England received three awards for excellence in communications from the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).

Nexus coverAACOM presented its "Excellence in Communications" awards at its recent Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri. The College of Osteopathic Medicine’s online newsletter The COMmunicator won Best Newspaper or Newsletter and UNECOM staff member Steve Smith's feature written for the e-newsletter won Best Feature Story or Article. UNE’s alumni magazine Nexus was awarded third place for Best Magazine.

Entries were judged for excellence in concept, content, design, writing, editing and final production quality, as well as creativity and effectiveness in achieving the stated goals and objectives of the project.

COMmunicator
The COMmunicator is a monthly web-based e-newsletter for students, faculty and staff at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

It is published monthly during the school year and, in addition to UNECOM news, includes in-depth, magazine-style articles about a current first- or second-year COM student that provide a historical, sociological and sometimes political context for events that have helped shape the lives of the student featured each issue. The November 2007 issue was submitted for review; it can be viewed at /com/rsas/newsletter/nov07a.asp

Feature
“The Creature that Lifts the Bed: Steven Fosmire, MSII,” a feature article from UNECOM’s The COMmunicator, (September 2007 issue) was awarded Best Article or Feature Story. Written by UNECOM Recruitment, Student and Alumni Services staff member Steve Smith, “The Creature that Lifts the Bed” highlights a student’s two-week experience embedded as a resident in a veteran’s nursing home during the summer between his first and second years of medical school.

Fosmire, himself a veteran, enhanced his appreciation for geriatrics and the complexities of the physician-patient relationship as he lived the day-to-day life of a nursing home resident. The food, the night sounds, and the supervised showers all help to bring home the challenge of caring for geriatric patients in their twilight years. The article can be viewed at /com/rsas/newsletter/sept07a.asp

Nexus
The Nexus, UNE’s publication for alumni and friends, was awarded Best Magazine. Nexus is published three times per year: the Summer 2007 issue was created by UNE staff members Danielle Vayenas, editor and associate director of communications, Kristin Quatrano, graphic designer, and Sarah Day, writer and communications assistant.

The magazine also includes articles and information submitted by other staff, faculty, alumni and students as well. Highlights from the award-winning issue of Nexus can be found at /ur/nexus/07summer/

The lead article “Meeting the Challenge: UNECOM’s Biomedical Research Facility” provided the osteopathic community and all alumni the opportunity to see the results of the ongoing fund raising campaign for the first building on either campus dedicated to advancing research.

It followed the naming ceremony tied into UNECOM’s Senior Week Awards Ceremony, and set the stage for the last fund raising push, the Morgane Challenge. Readers were able to see the artist’s rendering of the completed facility and all were invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony in October.
