Trustees join in support of Bush Cultural Center Functioning as a hub for the University, a bright and airy Town Square will greet visitors to the Center and host offices for International Programs and Study and Student Affairs. A spectacular 500-seat performance hall anchors the Center and will host cultural events, speakers, conferences and symposia to strengthen the liberal arts at UNE. In addition to supporting the College of Arts and Sciences, the Bush Cultural Center will increase the quantity and quality of cultural programming available to its neighbors in the community. This much-needed facility will help our growing undergraduate population at a critical time in their intellectual development and address the pressing need for a cultural center to support the expanded undergraduate programming and residential life on campus. | Nominations for employee of the year are sought We are seeking nominations for the 2005-06 UNE Employee of the Year Award. Qualified candidates will be individuals who go beyond the call of regular duties and positional responsibilities and have significantly enhanced the quality of life University wide. Typically these efforts are often unrecognized. All employees, except for senior administrators, are eligible for this award. The recipient of last year's inaugural award was Denise Gendron. The winner will receive a Presidential Citation Award and a $1,000 check. Please send your nomination and letter of support to Ricarda Wlodarczak, Office of the President. Deadline for submission will be March 6, 2006. The Review Committee comprised of Denise Gendron, Jan Froehlich, Ray Handy and Ricarda Wlodarczak will then submit their recommendation to President Featherman. | ||

Noam Chomsky and William Anderson highlight UNE's annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration Noam Chomksy, Ph.D., world-famous author, scholar, activist and one of America’s foremost public intellectuals, and Dr. William Anderson, a former close associate of Martin Luther King, Jr., highlight the University of New England’s 19th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration with simultaneous presentations at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006.Prof. Chomsky’s lecture is titled “Universality of Human Rights: Moral and Legal Basis, Official Doctrine, and the Case of Martin Luther King.” His noontime presentation will be held in the Simard-Pettapiece-Wescott Rooms in the Campus Center on the University Campus in Biddeford. Also at noon on January 25, William Anderson, D.O., one of the founders of the Albany Movement (at the epicenter of the Civil Rights Movement), will speak on “The Past that Foretells the Future in Health Care.” His lecture will take place in Room 205, Harold Alfond Health Center, University Campus, and be video-conferenced to the CHP Classroom (Parker Pavilion) on UNE’s Westbrook College Campus in Portland.Both lectures are free and open to the public. | Nobel Prize Presentation The Department of English invites all members of the UNE community to view this year's Nobel laureate, Harold Pinter, address the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on the occasion of his selection for the prize in literature. Titled, "Art, Truth & Politics," Pinter's pre-recorded lecture is one of the most powerful and dramatic literary and political events in recent years. The lecture will be shown at the St. Francis Room, UC, on Monday, February 13, at 11:50 a.m. Food will not be served in order not to distract viewers.A conversation with Dr. Mahoney and other faculty members will follow. | ||

| Annual Lock-in Night The Undergraduate Student Government is putting on its annual Lock-in on Friday night, February 3. This is a chem-free event in which the entire Campus Center is utilized to produce fun and games for the student body. As the name implies, students are only allowed into the event once; if theyleave you are locked out. Inside the event many things occur from the finale of UNE Idol, t-shirt art, novelties, a dance and much more. Prizes are given out at the end of the night for those people who won tickets during the event. This is traditionally one of the largest events on campus. This a great opportunity for faculty and staff to be with students in an out-of-class atmosphere. Traditionally, we have faculty and staff dealers at the Casino, which occurs from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. We encourage anyone that can give a half hour of time or more to dealing at the casino to please e-mail me: jcastonguay@pipeline.une.edu . At 8:30 p.m. that evening there is someone available to train dealers how to deal, it is a really easy and fun job. | MOAB Training The Department of Safety and Security is pleased to provide MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) training for UNE employees at no cost . In brief, MOAB is an in-depth, internationally recognized program that teaches people how to recognize, reduce and manage anxious, aggressive and/or violent behavior by using compassionate and empathetic skills. It is important to note that statistics from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicate that workplace violence has emerged as an increasing and important safety issue in today's workplace. To help evaluate whether this training would benefit you, listed below are known factors that may increase a worker's risk for workplace assault. In recognition of your busy schedules we invite you to contact us to schedule a day that is conducive to your departments specific needs. The class requires a commitment of 3 hours and session times range from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. To optimize your experience the maximum class size will be 20 or a minimum of 4. Paulette St. Ours, associate dean of College of Arts and Sciences and member of the NEASC Steering Committee, attended the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Annual Meeting and Conference in Boston, Mass, Dec. 7-9, 2005. A number of sessions focused on the new Standards for Accreditation that are taking effect in January 2006. UNE will be one of the first groups undergoing reaccreditation review under the new guidelines. Paulette shared some of her observations with members of the University Council in December. She will also report about these changes to the Board of Trustees at their February meeting. Richard Roberts, faculty emeritus, will give a piano recital of music by Debussy, Mozart, Schubert and Schoenberg on January 29, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Portland.
