UNE Exhibits Paintings by Matthew Kelly and Seth Wieder
Separate exhibitions by two emerging artists are now on display through June 20th at the University of New England's University Campus, 11 Hills Beach Road, Biddeford.
Matthew Kelly
In the Campus Center Gallery are landscape paintings by Matthew Kelly. Kelly has exhibited his work at The Living Seed Gallery in New Paltz, N.Y., and the Gallery at R&F in Kingston, N.Y. He studied at three New York colleges (Marist College, Queens College and Hunter College).
According to the artist, "These paintings are exercises in balance. My inspiration is the tension created by the relationship of subject and environment. Does the subject define itself, or is the subject defined by its environment? Definition is a struggle, and it's the tension created which drives the narrative. I've balanced out the subject-environment relationship so that there is a flexible co-dependence in terms of definition. It's the perpetual motion of definition that I am drawn towards. The ultimate goal is that the narrative quality of each painting remains regenerative. If it moves, it can be balanced."
The Campus Center Gallery is open 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily.
Seth Wieder
Paintings by Seth Wieder are on display in the Stella Maris Gallery. His work, according to the exhibit's curator Gina Adams, "is quite driven by nature and man's effect on it. His background in illustration shows in the precise detail observable in his paintings. He spends long hours perfecting each small painting, and the size refers back to the both fragile and intimate relationship man has to the environment. He is a master with color and his draftsmanship is excellent; the two combined lead the painting into a story board, leading the viewer into depths of imagination as to what is taking place in the work and the artist's mind. He has studied John James Audubon and other more contemporary naturalist painters."
Wieder studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and has exhibited at AS220 Gallery in Providence, R.I., The Salmon Falls Lower Mill Gallery in Rollinsford, N.H., and the Woods Gerry Gallery in Providence.
The Stella Maris Gallery is open 8 a.m. - 5p.m., Monday through Friday.
