Athletic Training Education Program Co-Medical Director named 2009 Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association Dr. David G. Moyer Award winner
BIDDEFORD, Maine - Douglas W. Brown, M.D., Co-Medical Director for the UNE Athletic Training Education Program, has been chosen as the 2009 recipient of the Dr. David G. Moyer Award by the Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association.
The Moyer Award is presented annually to a physician that has served the profession of athletic training as an educator and an advocate and has also served the community in which s/he lives and works. As a recipient, Dr. Brown joins a list of physicians that includes many of the most prominent names in the field of sports medicine.
ATEP Director Wayne Lamarre said that "Dr. Brown has always been such a tremendous ally to athletic trainers and athletic training students here in Maine, and we are thrilled that he has now been recognized by our peers in the EATA for his dedication to the advancement of the profession and his continued support of local athletes. Since 2003, Dr. Brown has been a clinical preceptor for UNE athletic training students. A native of Waterville, Dr. Brown graduated from Bowdoin College (1968) and earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine (1972). After a surgical internship in Rochester, NY, and orthopaedic residency at UVM, he completed fellowships in sports medicine both at UVM and the Sports Medicine Clinic in Atlanta.
Prior to moving to Portland in 1980, Dr. Brown served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and as team physician at the U.S. Naval Academy. He was also orthopaedic surgeon at the Naval Hospital in Annapolis.
In the field of sports medicine, Dr. Brown has been the team physician for Portland High School since 1980, for the U.S. Olympic Committee and for U.S. Soccer. For more than 15 years he has traveled to 24 countries to cover over 40 international soccer matches, including the (Men’s) World Cup in Italy in1990. In 1993 he was appointed the Women’s National Team head team physician, and he has covered numerous international matches with that team, including two World Cups (Sweden ’85 - Bronze Medal and USA ’99 - Gold Medal).
He has also been a member of the U.S. Soccer Medical Committee since 1988. In 2002 he helped organize and develop the first-ever International Soccer Sports Medicine symposium jointly sponsored by FIFA, U.S. Soccer, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
Dr Brown has been an active member of AOSSM since 1981, and has served on the board of directors (’89-’01), as treasurer (’92-’96), and as president (’98-’99). Since 2001, he has also been a member of the board of trustees and treasurer of the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Since 1985, Dr. Brown has also been a member of the Herodicus Society, an international sports medicine research organization, and was president in 1998.
His research interests have included post-operative pain management and ACL reconstruction, and he has published articles and presented papers in these areas nationally and internationally. Dr. Brown has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons since 1979 and a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) since 1982.
Dr. Brown will accept his award at the 61st Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium of the EATA on January 10, 2009 at the Marriott Copley Place in Boston, Massachusetts. ATEP faculty and students will be in attendance.
