UNE Names Current Dean and Department Chair to Interim Senior Administration Posts

University of New England officials drew on in-house talent recently, appointing a current college dean and an academic department chair to serve as interim senior administrators.

Jacque Carter, Ph.D., of Kennebunkport, has been appointed by UNE President Sandra Featherman, Ph.D., to serve as the University's interim vice president of academic affairs. Carter has been the dean of UNE's College of Arts and Sciences since 1999.
Lemuel Berry, Ph.D., resigned from the academic vice president's position in June.

Paul Burlin, Ph.D., of Portland, was then appointed by Carter to serve as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Burlin has been chair of UNE's History Department since 1997.

Jacque Carter
"Dr. Carter is an extremely talented administrator who has done an outstanding job in building the College of Arts and Sciences. I have great confidence in his ability to also be an outstanding academic vice president," President Featherman wrote to the UNE community in announcing the new appointment.

Carter joined UNE in 1989 as a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. His professional expertise is in systematics, ecology and conservation of marine fishes. For the past three years he has lead a UNE-based research project to study the migratory habits of striped bass, Maine's premier sports fish and an important part of Maine's marine ecosystem.

Carter received his master's degree in biological sciences from Northern Illinois University and his Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary's School of Marine Science.

Paul Burlin
"Dr. Burlin is a talented and accomplished professor whose passion and expertise in his field of history is well noted by his students and his peers ... Dr. Burlin is a steadfast advocate for the liberal arts and understands that the essential mission of the College is to promote student learning through excellent teaching, strong scholarship and research and meaningful service. ... I have every confidence in his ability to lead this college to even greater heights and accomplishments," Carter wrote in his announcement to the UNE community.

Burlin came to UNE in 1990 to teach history. He was the founding chair of UNE's History Department seven years later. Burlin has written a book on the little-known relationships between Maine and Hawaii during this country's 19th century expansion. His current scholarly interests include research on Brazilian intellectuals' perspectives about United States' history, culture and society.

Burlin earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy from Heidelberg College and his Ph.D. in American history from Rutgers University.

UNE's College of Arts and Sciences over the past seven years has greatly expanded and diversified its range of academic degree programs. The College, based on the University Campus in Biddeford, has also grown significantly in student enrollment in the past few years.
