Art Gallery presents 'Faces of the Mind' Sept. 25 - Nov. 25

PORTLAND - The Art Gallery at the University of New England presents "Faces of the Mind," on display Sept. 25 - Nov. 25, 2007 on the Westbrook College Campus in Portland.

"Faces of the Mind" features portraits of mental illness, photographed by Gerald Robinov, a Portland photographer who captured the faces of several local people living with mental illness.

With one in four persons experiencing a mental health issue in their lifetime, the stories of these subjects are not only courageous but relevant.

A by-invitation-only gala fundraiser on Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. will benefit the Spring Harbor Hospital in Westbrook, Maine, one of the two locations where Robinov made portraits of people with mental illness.

Since the age of 13, Robinov has been fascinated by photography and has held the long-term goal to grow from a "picture taker" to a photographer. In November of 1996, he had his first photography show, a collection of black and white images, followed by two additional black and white shows. These photo essays featuring cancer survivors highlighted life after cancer and were shown in Los Angeles, California and Sarasota, Florida.

Robinov has photographed Maine Senator George Mitchell, Senator Susan Collins, Governor Angus King, and Toshiyuki Shimada, the conductor of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. In addition, the Walt Disney Corporation commissioned Robinov to photograph images of the Maine woods as background for the movie Bambi 2.
