13 students complete UNE's Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Public Health Program

The University of New England celebrated 13 students' completion of the school's Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Public Health Program on Friday, August 19, 2005. The ceremony was held in the evening at the Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences on UNE's Biddeford Campus.

The completion ceremony included a special faculty award and keynote speaker.

Faculty Award
Christine Prue, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., was given the eponymous Dr. Christine Prue Service Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award also recognizes her commitment to the establishment of the University's Graduate Public Health Education Program. Prue is a senior communications analyst from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She has been a popular faculty member and she helped develop the Social and Behavioral Health course. The award was established this year in her honor.

Keynote Speaker
This year's keynote speaker was C. William Snyder, Ph.D., D.D.S., who teaches epidemiology and is a statistical consultant for the Orthodontics Department at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. Dr. Snyder has a long association with UNE: he taught at Westbrook College's Dental Hygiene Program; he taught mathematics for four years in UNE's College of Arts and Sciences; he taught pathology in UNE's International Nursing Program in Israel; and he taught biostatistics in the College of Osteopathic Medicine's Graduate Public Health Education Program from its onset in 2002.

Graduating Students
Graduating students were: Sharon Bagalio, R.N., B.S.N.; Lucie Rioux, B.S.; Kathleen Chase, B.S.N.; Jacob Brooks, B.S. (second-year UNE med student); Elaine Carpino-Pettegrow, R.N., B.S.; Helena Peterson, R.N., B.S.N.; Penny Townsend, B.S.; Victoria Wiegman, M.Ed., B.A.; Jane McGillicuddy, M.Ed., B.A.; Janet Sawyer, B.S.; Cynthia Richards, B.S.; Michael Loomis, B.S.; and Jaqueline Seguin, B.A.

The ceremony concluded with the students reciting the Public Health Professionals' Oath.

UNE's certificate program began in spring, 2002. This web-based distance education program provides students with the core public health concepts they need to either enhance their professional knowledge or to pursue a graduate degree in the field.

Students can earn the complete 18-credit certificate in as little as one year, or transfer their credits directly into UNE's new Master's in Public Health degree program.

The program-designed for working adults, traditional students, health professionals and medical students-includes part-time classes, distance learning, and a summer intensive to make the program as flexible as possible.

The certificate program is offered by UNE's Division of Community Programs in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
