University of New England hires new vice president for institutional advancement

Harley Knowles, Ed.D., has been hired as the new vice president for institutional advancement of the University of New England. He will begin as vice president on September 17, 2007.

In his new position, Knowles will lead the University’s institutional advancement team, which consists of communications, development and alumni advancement.

“I am extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Harley Knowles as our new vice president for institutional advancement,” said UNE President Danielle Ripich. “I look forward to working with Harley and the entire team as we continue to build resources for the University.”

Knowles currently serves as vice president for development and assistant professor of education at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, a position he has held since 2004. In this position, he was responsible for providing leadership, management and administrative direction for all aspects of the university’s fundraising, alumni affairs and public relations. Knowles arrived at Shenandoah University in 1992. During his tenure there, he has also served as vice president for student affairs, dean of students and associate dean of student affairs. He previously worked at the College of William and Mary.

Knowles has been awarded many honors, including Virginia’s Outstanding Student Affairs Professional for a Four-Year Institution in 2002 by the Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and Administrator of the Year in 1998 by the Shenandoah University Parents’ Association.

A native of Bangor, Maine, Knowles earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maine, Orono. He earned his doctor of education from Nova Southeastern University.
