Wooden reliefs and 3D sculptures by architect Blake Hendrickson on exhibit at UNE Campus Center
BIDDEFORD, Maine - The University of New England is hosting an exhibition of wooden relief and 3D sculptures by Maine architect Blake Hendrickson.
Hendrickson’s exhibit is on display in the Campus Center of University of New England’s Biddeford campus. The exhibition runs through March 30, 2008, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
Hendrickson states: “Patterns are everybody’s first language. Abstract patterns invite a further definition by the viewer to which they bring all of their pattern-related vocabulary. As an artist, I am drawn to work that invites this dialog with the viewer. It allows me to return to my studio with new perspectives and interpretive tools. Very few materials are as ubiquitous, malleable, and tactile as wood. It is always a welcome challenge to take up that medium to create interwoven and colliding patterns that rely upon - yet begin to transcend - such a familiar material.”
Hendrickson received a degree in architecture from Virginia Tech and transitioned away from building design to naval architecture, marine engineering and ship construction. His hobby of working with wood in geometric designs and patterns developed into a career as a sculptural artist. Hendrickson resides in Brunswick and Franklin, Maine.
