Third year UNECOM resident awarded AOA Research Fellowship Award

Joy L. Palmer, D.O., currently a third-year resident in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM), was recently awarded an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Research Fellowship Award. The $5,000 award is given annually to osteopathic medical students, interns and residents in order to fund one-year osteopathic medicine research projects.

Dr. Palmer’s research project focuses on the “Study of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) in the Management of Angina.”  The study will measure the effectiveness of OMM in decreasing angina symptoms and the amount of sub-lingual nitroglycerin used. The study will include 30 participants, both male and female, ranging in ages from 21 to 81 who have class II or class III angina.

Dr. Palmer will present an abstract of her project’s findings at the annual AOA Research Conference, which will be held in October 2008.

AOA Research Fellowship Program
The AOA Research Fellowship program is designed to support research training and enables the applicant to conduct a basic science or clinical research project that will make a contribution to osteopathic medicine. The fellowship is, in effect, seed funding to encourage an osteopathic physician or physician-in-training to contribute to research throughout his or her career in osteopathic medicine.

Joy Palmer
Joy L. Palmer, D.O., is a 2005 graduate of UNECOM and a 2003-2004 UNECOM Undergraduate Fellow. Raised in Van Buren, Maine, Dr. Palmer holds her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Marquette University. She plans to open her own private practice, continue to pursue research in osteopathic medicine and become formally involved in osteopathic medical education.
