This photographic exhibition features ten Maine women whose livelihoods have come from the land and celebrates the relationship between the land we live on and the soul and spirit of place.

An opening reception with the artist will be held on Monday, December 5 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

All events are free and open to the public.

Living on the Land
In addition to Lauren Shaw's compelling photography, an interactive DVD shown within the installation further deepens the experience by showing the women's stories in their own words. The exhibition inspires the audience to look at the relationship they have to their personal surroundings and how that relationship affects their communities.

"Maine Women: Living on the Land" will travel throughout the state of Maine through August 2006, with educational events scheduled for the community. It will then be available to travel throughout the United States. One such event is a film showing that will be held at the SALT Institute for Documentary Studies at 110 Exchange Street in Portland on January 14, 2006 at 6:00 p.m.

For more events, check http://www.laurenshaw.com/. Talks are also planned for the Art Gallery at UNE, and will be posted on the Art Gallery's website.

Film and Book
In conjunction with this exhibition, the film version of "Maine Women: Living on the Land" premiered in July at the Maine International Film Festival in Waterville, Maine to sold out audiences and was shown again at the Camden International Film Festival in October. The film will also be shown at the Strand Theater in Rockland, Maine as well as appearing on Maine Public Television.

A book of "Maine Women: Living on the Land" has been published by the Farnsworth Museum. It includes an accompanying essay by Lucy Lippard, a widely published art and culture critic, as well as the DVD, "Maine Women: Living on the Land." The book has been widely received and will be available for sale in the Art Gallery at UNE.
