UNE medical school names Student D.O. of the Year
BIDDEFORD - Suzie McGrorty, MSII, a second-year student at the University of New England's College of Osteopathic Medicine, was chosen as this year's UNECOM Student D.O. of the Year.
McGrorty was chosen because of her commitment to her studies, the University and the surrounding communities. She has a long list of service activity involvement including organizing a fund-raising road race for the Biddeford Free Clinic, helping out at Camp Sunshine in Casco, and she is committed to helping her fellow students by tutoring Gross Anatomy and helping others with their classes and work.
McGrorty was also recently named one of four Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) fellows at UNECOM for the 2007-2008 academic year.
"Suzie combines intelligence, hard work, caring and generosity that she selflessly shares with the UNECOM and local community," said Don Tower, president of the Sigma Sigma Phi Service Society. "She has boundless, infectious positive energy, a tireless work ethic, and sensitivity for the well- being of her fellow classmates, setting a high standard for her fellow Osteopathic medical students to aspire to."
The Student D.O. of the Year award is given each year at each osteopathic medical school in the country. Generated by each school's student government, the award serves to honor those who, in the eyes of their peers, best show commitment to their school, community and the osteopathic profession. All osteopathic medical students are eligible for the nomination and the selection is based on the review of the class presidents, Student Government Association president, and clinical and basic science faculty members.
McGrorty is currently in the running for National Student D.O. of the Year, the winner of which will be recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
