UNE exhibits works by MECA painting majors
A collection of paintings by four Maine College of Art painting majors will be on display in the Stella Maris Gallery of the University of New England in Biddeford from August 30 through October 1, 2005.
Artist Rebecca Brandt paints surreal landscapes created through momentary glimpses of recalled scenery. Initial memories are filtered through her mind before her impressions are transferred to the canvas. Her paintings render the grotesque form glamorously and create oddities that are lovely as well as strange.
Derek Smith Luke has selected "domestication and dualities" as leading themes in his paintings. His paintings reveal an intimacy with the object yet also a clinical absence from each piece.
Taylor Franklin's work focuses what it means to be an artist and a person living in this culture. Present in his paintings are conflicting themes, situations and concepts. His paintings reveal ideas, which are fresh, mysterious and exciting.
Artist Colleen Mesolella has also included her paintings in this exhibition.
The Stella Maris Gallery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
