In a world of increasing threats from terrorism and other risks and dangers present in everyday life, more and more trained leaders are needed to help promote good health, protect communities, and prevent disease and injury. This is the mission of public health professionals.
Working adults and post-baccalaureate students can now earn a master of public health degree (MPH) full or part time and online from the University of New England, a regional leader in the education of health-care professionals. New online MPH courses begin in January 2005.
The 45-credit graduate program, offered through UNE’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, is designed to be flexible and practical. The vast majority of the degree program is offered online in an integrated video and Powerpoint format. The curriculum also includes a workplace-based practicum and a summer intensive workshop. Faculty members are highly knowledgeable health-care professionals with real-world experience in their fields.
Critical Need Many studies have documented a critical need to better prepare the U.S. workforce to address core public health services.
"When people think of public health, we want them to think of the University of New England," said Meredith Tipton, Ph.D., M.P.H., associate dean for community programs. "This very convenient, flexible degree program, which is focused on practice and management, will provide students with the basic knowledge, skills and values to gain employment or get promoted in the burgeoning field of public health. With Maine’s only medical school, and our high concentration of health professions degrees, UNE is the perfect school to offer this degree program."
Certificate Program The MPH is a continuation of UNE’s highly successful 18-credit Certificate of Advanced Graduate Student in Public Health program that provides students with the core public health concepts they need to either enhance their professional knowledge or to pursue a graduate degree in the field. All certificate program courses are transferable to UNE’s MPH degree program.
The MPH curriculum is designed to enhance students’ skills in a variety of professional areas including analysis, communication, program development and planning, financial management, policy, ethics and law.
