Local lawyer and 2 students join UNE Board of Trustees

A local lawyer with a strong background in healthcare, an undergraduate sports management student and a graduate physical therapy student have joined the University of New England’s Board of Trustees.
 
Karin A. Gregory, J.D., M.P.H, of Fortune’s Rock, Maine; Tim St. John of Leominster, Mass.; and Owen Lennon, of Yarmouth, Maine, were appointed at the UNE board’s late-February meeting.
 
Karin Gregory
Attorney Gregory represents healthcare and technology companies, and offers business and financial advice to other entities, including a number of private equity firms. She is also involved with several New England-based nonprofit organizations as an advisor or board member.
 
Gregory began her career in healthcare in the 1980s, working in a series of technology and administrative positions, mostly for cancer centers such as the MIT Cancer Center and the Dana Faber Cancer Institute.

She shifted to the law in 1988 after graduating from Franklin Pierce Law Center. Gregory eventually focused her practice around technology commercialization for research institutions and small, start-up companies. She held the position of division director for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Immunization and Epidemiology Program while maintaining her practice.
 
Gregory repositioned her career several more times, becoming an investment professional for a state-sponsored venture capital firm in Boston, then co-founding two companies – Dover Medical Ventures, L.P. (a fund to develop promising medical devices) and eMedicus, a company that reviews and monitors clinical research studies.
 
She currently serves as the vice chair of the board of the Pierce Law Center, is on the advisory board for the Boston Children’s Hospital Angel Network and serves on the boards of Catalyst Oncology, Aiko Pharmaceuticals, eMedicus, Inc., Bigelow Foundation for Oceanographic Sciences, the Biddeford Coastal Coalition, Affinity of Maine, Maine SOS, Maine Technology Institute Biotechnology Board and the Biddeford Conservation Commission.      

In addition, she sits on the Heart of Biddeford Economic Restructuring Committee and the Maine Chapter of the American Heart Association. She is an adjunct faculty member at the Boston University School of Public Health and at the University of New England, and is a guest speaker at many business events throughout the New England area.

Gregory holds a bachelor’s degree from Wells College in biochemistry, an master’s of public health from Boston University in health services, and a law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center.  She also holds an associate broker license in Maine and a certificate in advanced licensing. She is licensed to practice law in Massachusetts. 

Tim St. John
St. John, who will represent the University Campus in Biddeford, is currently a junior in UNE’s College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in sport management with a minor in business administration. He has held many positions including senior resident assistant, assistant to the director of recreational sports, a Undergraduate Student Government representative, and Student Activities Office intern. St. John is a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society.

Owen Lennon
Lennon, who will represent UNE’s Westbrook College Campus in Portland,  is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program in the College of Health Professions. While an UNE undergraduate student, he was six times on the dean’s list, graduated with summa cum laude honors, and was  captain of the varsity golf team. Lennon was honored with the Scholar Athlete Award in three consecutive seasons.

Both students are trustees-elect until June, 2006, when they will be come full voting members of the board. UNE added student trustees to the board seven years ago to provide enhanced student perspective to the board and to enhance communications and interactions between the two campuses.
