UNE in top tier of U.S. News & World Report's 2008 Rankings of the region's best colleges and universities

BIDDEFORD/PORTLAND - Thanks in part to improvements in graduation rate and student selectivity, the University of New England has once again been ranked as one of the "Best Universities" in the North that offer "a full range of undergraduate and master's programs" in the 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges" from U.S. News & World Report.

imageUNE was ranked 67th in the top tier of this category and no other college or university in Maine was ranked higher. This is the sixth year that U.S. News has ranked UNE a top regional university.

UNE
The University of New England is an independent university with two distinctive campuses on the coast of southern Maine. The University's mission is to educate men and women to advance the quality of human life and the environment. UNE has more than 40 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including Maine's only medical school, which is also New England's only College of Osteopathic Medicine. The medical school, located on the oceanfront University Campus in Biddeford, emphasizes the education of primary care physicians and has graduated more than 2,000 osteopathic physicians.

The expanding College of Arts and Sciences, also on the Biddeford campus, features a unique Marine Science Center that combines education, research and marine animal rehabilitation in one facility. The Westbrook College Campus in Portland houses the College of Health Professions' innovative model for integrated, interdisciplinary health care education, preparing students to work collaboratively to promote the best possible care and health outcomes.

A new College of Pharmacy is currently being developed, with pre-pharmacy students now being accepted for the fall of 2007. The professional program leading to the doctor of pharmacy degree will begin in fall of 2009. UNE educates more Maine students in the health professions than any other single college or university.

The University of New England is also developing into a significant research institution, with an emphasis on biomedical, applied health and marine science research.
