Baseball Coach John Winkin reflects on 60 years of coaching for Harold Alfond Sports Medicine Lecture Sept. 18th

John  Winkin, one of the nation’s most accomplished college baseball coaches and head baseball coach at Husson College in Bangor, will present the 2006 Harold Alfond Sports Medicine Lecture at 5 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2006 in the Wallace Trust Lecture Hall (Room 205) of the Harold Alfond Center for Health Sciences at the University of New England in Biddeford.

There will also be live audio/video feed to the CHP Lecture Hall, Parker Pavilion, at UNE’s Westbrook College Campus in Portland.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Winkin's remarks will focus on what he’s learned over a six-decade-long career of college coaching. A post-lecture reception with beverages and light hors d’oeuvres will be held in the 3rd Floor Lobby of the Alfond Center. Coach Winkin
Coach Winkin, one of the most prominent figures in Maine baseball, was head coach at both Colby College (1954-1974) and the University of Maine (1975-1996) before taking the head coaching position at Husson.

Winkin has been a scout for the Boston Red Sox, a pre-game announcer for the New York Yankees and worked with Ted Williams at his baseball camp for 15 years. He also coached the 1983 U.S. National Baseball Team and has been a recipient of both the national and NCAA Division 1 Coach of the Year awards. Winkin is the author of four books, including The Baseball Coaching Bible, and is the founding editor of Sport Magazine.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Duke University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Columbia University.

This is the fifth annual Harold Alfond Sports Medicine Lecture at the University of New England. The lecture is sponsored by Saco Bay Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, UNE’s Department of Exercise and Sport Performance, Athletic Training Club and Office of University Relations.
