Sports: Women’s Swim Team Debuted in October
The University of New England has pushed the number of its varsity sport offerings to 13 with the addition of women’s swimming, which began competition the end of October.
Coach Kate Mulholland’s team is made up of 24 swimmers - experienced upperclass swimmers and some very talented newcomers, with at least eight being first-year students. "I am really excited to be here, and I’ve looked forward to the start of the season," she says. "It is incredible to have a full squad in the first varsity year and it bodes well for building a winning program."
She recognizes UNE commitment to high academic standards.
"I am proud to be part of an athletic department with such high academic standards," comments Mulholland. "I expect the swim team to contribute to the continued success of our athletes in the classroom."
Coach Mulholland, who also serves as UNE’s athletics facilities manager and aquatics coordinator, previously worked in the aquatics facility at Simon’s Rock College in Barrington, Mass. She has a wide variety of experiences as a swim coach and instructor, including being the head coach of the Snappers Swim Club and instructing swimming camp at Bates College.
Kate is a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where she attained a bachelor’s degree in English and communications. A Maine native, she attended Lewiston High School.
The Nor’easters’ first meet was at Colby-Sawyer College on October 23, and they returned home Saturday, November 6th for their first meet on the Biddeford campus swimming against Simon’s Rock College. As of then they were 2-1. For the full schedule, view the website at www.une.edu/athletics/swim/.
