Message from the President

Since my arrival in July, I have had a chance to reflect a bit on my experience at UNE. It’s been a whirlwind of activity complete with exciting new initiatives and a strategic plan to develop, among other tasks. However hectic the pace, the overall feeling I’ve had from the start is one of being welcomed into a big warm family.

President Danielle N. RipichWhen we sent out invitations for the presidential inauguration to students, faculty, staff , trustees, friends and, of course, all of our alumni, I felt as if we were inviting the entire UNE family to join with me in celebrating this special occasion. The ceremony, held on September 30th, was wonderful, – I feel now like I truly am part of this great UNE family.

As author Richard Bach wrote, “The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.” Many of you are long-time friends and supporters of the University, playing a vital role in our efforts. Coming from a wide and diverse breadth of experience and working together to meet a common goal, this family is indeed a formidable force.

Moving forward, we must marshal our resources to become the significant educational and research institution to which we aspire. As we share our goals for the future, I know I can count on every one of you as part of the University’s family to support those efforts. Another author, Alex Haley, wrote, “In every conceivable manner, the family is a link to our past and a bridge to our future.” You are, and will continue to be, an important bridge to our successful future.

This issue of Nexus features many exciting things going on at your University. I encourage you to read it closely, and keep us updated on your accomplishments as well through class notes and ideas for news and feature stories.

I feel as if I’m already at home at UNE and in Maine. I have been graciously welcomed by those of you I have met, and I look forward to meeting and interacting more with all of you. Thank you for your past support, and your continuing commitment to our remarkable UNE family.

Danielle N. Ripich, Ph.D.
President
