Web Guidelines

Hyperlinks to Web Pages Outside the University Website

We don't want our visitors to leave the University website inadvertently. Hyperlinks to external websites should provide a new browser window for the new website, while still keeping UNE's website in front of the visitor. Essentially, you do not want to send anyone away from the UNE website, so by opening a second browser window, we still keep the UNE website open and in front of the visitor to easily come back to without using their back button through an unknown number of pages.

Photographs

All photographs should be very sharp, produced from a good quality scan or digital photograph. For best quality, photographs should be saved as jpg. Any image other than a photograph may be saved as a gif. Standard DPI (dots per inch) is 72 for images on the Internet, whether a .jpg or .gif image.

Be sure to save your original digital file somewhere safe so you won't have to rescan it. Use copies of the original image file to change anything about your image or photograph for the websites use.

Department Sub-Pages

Pictures or images you select for your department's sub-pages may be any size height with a width no more than 350 pixels.

All photographs on sub-pages must have a black border added. If you do not have a photo editing program such as PhotoShop to apply a drop shadow, please contact the UNE webmaster for help with this.

Academic Departments vs. UNE Catalog
Never add specific information about curriculum requirements or course listings to your academic department website. This information is reserved for the UNE Catalog, to which the department websites can link. This policy was developed to avoid conflicting information about curriculum requirements that could lead to legal problems. Use your academic department website to market your programs - highlight faculty accomplishments and interests, profile students, explain what careers graduates can pursue, be creative.

Graphics

Well-designed, crisp, professional-looking graphic images can enliven your webpages, but badly scanned graphics and amateur-looking clip art does not project a professional image.

Because the University's website does not accept advertising and because multiple corporate logos tend to create graphic clutter, you should avoid using corporate logos on your webpages. More information website policies on corporate logo, advertising and sponsorships.

Table Structure

Tables are used on web pages to structure content based on column and row form. A table may be used without a border by setting the border equal to zero. If you decide to use a table with a border, please use the formula of the table below if possible to create a unified look for the University website.

Border = 1 or 0
All cells with color #CCCCCC

File Naming Conventions and Guidelines

Be careful when naming your files. A filename can have lower case letters, but they can NOT have spaces or certain characters and symbols within the filename. Some examples of the characters not to be used within a folder or file name include " ' : { ] \ | + = - * @ # ! ) ~.

A bad filename choice and its example:
"flower purple.jpg" will come out as "flower%20purple.jpg" in HTML due to the space between the two words.

When naming a file, simply use all lower case letters and run words together - this is the best defense against something being misunderstood by HTML programming or any computer transfers.

A good filename choice and its example:
images/flowerpurple.jpg
