Great Location/Full Complement of Programs

They also like the opportunities provided by the University's full complement of programs. UNE offers degree programs in health sciences, natural sciences, human services, management, education and the liberal arts, and includes Maine's only medical school, the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, which emphasizes the education of primary care physicians. This relationship provides them with many unique opportunities, not the least of which is a full semester of Human Gross Anatomy in a state-of-the-art laboratory. Enrollments for the two campuses in Biddeford and Portland, Maine, total 2,364, including 496 medical students. To achieve its mission, the Athletic Training Education Program employs 3.5 full-time faculty members and more than 30 off-site clinical instructors whose training includes athletic training, primary care medicine, nursing, orthopedic sports medicine, podiatry, emergency medicine, and physical therapy.

Small Classes
The program, which began in 1996 and became a major in 1998, currently houses more than 100 students, with didactic (lecture) courses typically enrolled at a student/instructor ratio of 30:1 in the Pre-Professional Phase and 25:1 in the Professional Phase. Clinical (hands-on) courses are conducted at a ratio of 15:1 or lower, and field experience rotations even lower – 4:1. At UNE, students aren’t just numbers – they have close interaction with faculty.
A History of Success
Graduating seniors are very successful on the BOC entry-level certification examination, with first-time pass rates well above the yearly national average, and many attend graduate schools tuition-free through graduate assistantships in athletic training.
Many UNE athletic training graduates are employed in and around Maine and New England in positions such as head athletic trainer, assistant athletic trainer, and strength and conditioning specialist
