Nurse Leadership Institute

Building Healthy Communities

The purpose of the Population-focused Nurse Leadership Institute is to provide a forum for community and public health nurses to build capacity and skill sets in team-based practice leadership when working with vulnerable communities.

The Nurse Leadership Institute will focus on the following principles:

  • Leadership development
  • Leadership among interprofessional teams
  • Leadership within a community of interest

Over time, participants will attend three day-long workshops at the University of New England. Local and national leadership from nursing, public health and health systems will facilitate instruction in an interactive, shared learning environment.

Participants will be paired with a mentor and/or CHANNELS/upstream faculty in developing an evidence-based, population oriented project designed to improve

  • A community based health outcome
  • A systems issue or
  • A nursing practice issue

Knowledge and skills gained from participation in the Nurse Leadership Institute will be brought back to respective workplaces and serve as an impetus for ongoing quality improvement, systems thinking and practice leadership.

The Nurse Leadership Institute fully funds participants’ tuition, meals for workshops, textbooks and modest support needed for the successful completion of a project. Space is limited to 15 participants. A certificate of completion from the University of New England will be awarded.
