In order to understand the circuitry in the retina, individual types of cells are studied in depth, developing an understanding of their anatomical structure, physiological function and biochemical characteristics. New cell identification and imaging techniques are being used to characterize the different sub-types of retinal ganglion cells. Immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization will be used to determine unique intrinsic markers for the different subtypes of cells.
