CUP Scholars Meetings

• What: Meets about monthly during the semester to advise CUP leadership on the further development of CUP and to participate in student-led learning activities with UNE mentors

Interprofessional Team Immersion (IPTI)

• What: Interprofessional teams of six students meet four times per semester, on the Portland campus for case-based and simulation learning
• Who: UNE health professions students
• When: Both fall and spring semesters
• Competencies addressed: U.S. and Canadian IPEC competencies

Rural Health Immersion

• What: One-week immersion with some pre-work done mostly online
• Who: Medical, dental medicine, pharmacy, and other graduate level and nursing students
• When: Fall Long Weekend 2017, March break and end of May 2018
• Where: Portland campus and Aroostook County or another rural area
• Cost: $200, limited financial aid may be available
• Competencies addressed: All 7 CUP competencies with an additional emphasis on the rural health competencies

Ghana Cultural Immersion

• What: 2-week Ghana Cultural Immersion
• Who: Nursing, PT, MPH, pharmacy, dental, and medical students
• When: Early August
• Where: Sekondi, Ghana

Nicaragua Cultural Immersion

• What: 1-week Nicaragua Cultural Immersion
• Who: UNE healthcare students
• When: June or July
• Where: Based on need, determined by Nicarguan Ministry of Health
• Competencies addressed: All 7 CUP competencies
• Cost: $900 covers hotel and translators, airfare is an additional cost
• Deadline: Registration in the Fall is encouraged

Dominican Republic Cultural Immersion

• What: 2-week DR Cultural Immersion
• Who: graduate healthcare students
• When: Every January and June
• Where: rural mountainous DR

Cambodia Cultural Immersion

• What: multi-week Cambodia Cultural Immersion
• Who: currently only available for dental students
• When: As per CDM
• Where: Angkor Children Hospital, Cambodia

Thailand Cultural Immersion

• What: 4-week cultural immersion in Thailand
• Who: Only available to COP at this time
• When: November and June
• Where: Bangkok, Thailand

TeamSTEPPS Certification

• What: Federal AHRQ TeamSTEPPS training for improved team-based care
• Who: Offered to all health professions students
• When: Offered on-campus or online

• Competencies addressed: U.S. and Canadian IPEC competencies as well as TeamSTEPPS knowledge, performance, and attitudes in communication, leadership, situation monitoring, and mutual support

Influenza Vaccine Clinics among Underserved Populations

• What: Influenza online module and vaccine clinics with underserved populations, including:
  • Homeless shelters with Portland Community Health Center;
  • VA clinic in Augusta;
  • Mercy VNA clinics in numerous locations in southern Maine and home vaccine visits; and
  • POD site at UNE (see below).
• Who: All vaccinators – medical, dental medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and PA students
• When: Each fall
• Where: Various locations, see above list
• Competencies addressed: All 7 CUP competencies plus skill development in administering vaccine, understanding influenza disease basics and control, and particular behavioral health competencies (for example, calming techniques, addressing behavioral health disorders/illnesses in vaccination settings)

Public Health Emergency Preparedness Alternate Care Site (ACS) Exercise

• What: Simulated Alternate Care Site (ACS) public health emergency exercise with area public health agencies to provide low acuity care during a public health emergency, along with online influenza vaccine administration module
• Who: Medical, nursing, pharmacy, PA, other appropriate students who may be interested (e.g., social work, dental medicine, etc.)
• When: October 20, 2017

• Competencies addressed: All 7 CUP competencies plus mass vaccine administration and medication distribution, and public health emergency preparedness

Public Health Emergency Preparedness Point of Dispensing (POD) Exercise

• What: Point of Distribution (POD) public health emergency exercise with area public health agencies, along with online influenza vaccine administration module
• Who: Medical, nursing, pharmacy, PA, other appropriate students who may be interested (e.g., social work (SW) dental medicine, etc.)
• When: October 27, 2017

Public Health Modules

• What: Online modules with in-person follow up on timely topics such as influenza vaccination and opioid addiction/chronic pain epidemic

DEA Drug Take Back Day

• What: Help provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for abuse and medications, along with online opioid addiction module
• Who: All healthcare students
• When: Once each semester (typically October and April/May)
• Where: Most communities
• Competencies addressed: All 7 CUP competencies with an emphasis on public health

Medication-Assisted Treatment Workshop

• What: This workshop will host several Maine experts who will discuss the current climate in Maine concerning the opioid epidemic and its impact on the state. Attendees will gain knowledge in areas including opioid use disorder diagnosis, prevention and treatment, and emphasizing Medication-Assisted Treatment

• When: October 28, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

Nutrition Education among Vulnerable Populations (SNAP-Ed)

• What: Students volunteer for a day with a SNAP-Ed nutrition educator, providing assistance with at least one nutrition education class for vulnerable populations
• Who: Health professions students
• When: Year round
• Where: In communities across Maine
• Competencies addressed: All 7 CUP competencies with an emphasis on public health

Interprofessional Mini-grant Project

• What: Teams from at least two professions apply for a mini-grant project that incorporates one or more of the competencies listed above
• Who: Students may pair with students from other UNE health professions
• When: Mini-grant proposals are vetted and awarded throughout the year; must be completed prior to graduation
• Where: Per mini-grant proposal
• Competencies addressed: Students must identify a minimum of one of the CUP competencies as a basis of their mini-grant proposal

GPH (Greater Portland Health) Support Group for Refugees and Immigrants

• Who: First or Second year students in UNE's Care for the Underserved Pathway (CUP) Scholar program who have an interest in urban and/or international underserved healthcare. Being able to speak Spanish, French, Portuguese, Somali, or Arabic is preferred. 
• What: Join a LCSW as she/he meets with recent refugees and immigrants in Portland
• Where: Maine Access Immigrant Network (MAIN), 237 Oxford Street, Suite 25-A, Portland
• When: Weekly (ongoing)

GPH Stress Management Group

• Who: First or Second year students in UNE's Care for the Underserved Pathway (CUP) Scholar program who have an interest in urban underserved healthcare
• What: Join a LCSW as she/he meets with patients to discuss stress management

IPE Shared Learning (IPEC Event)

• What: IPE Shared Learning events typically occur on the Portland Campus on Wednesdays, 12–1:30 p.m. Students should check whether an event they select outside of this time could serve as one of their CUP learning activities.
• Who: UNE health professions students
• When: Fall and spring semesters
• Where: Locations are announced on the events calendar on the Center for Excellence in Collaborative Education (CECE) website.
• Competencies addressed: CECE events focus on the intersection of cultural, professionalism, and health care competencies with particular attention given to work with underserved and marginalized populations.

Enhanced Clinical Interprofessional Rotations/Clerkships in Maine

• What: 4–6 week clerkships/rotations in integrated primary care settings such as FQHCs and family practices, using the care management and population health learning activities of UNE’s Clinical Interprofessional Curriculum (CIPC)
• Who: Medical, dental medicine, pharmacy, PA, SW, Nursing, PT, and other graduate health professions as are appropriate for the setting and the students
• When: Throughout the year
• Where: Maine primary care settings
• Competencies addressed: All 7 CUP competencies
• UNE CIPC: Includes 10 learning activities e.g., a comprehensive health assessment of and encounter with a complex patient, Quality Improvement

Population Health Interprofessional Rotations/Clerkships in Maine
