As a Political Science major, you have a wide variety of choices for internships, study abroad, and other practical experiences outside the classroom. In recent years, UNE students have interned with U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, and with U.S. Congressional Representatives Tom Allen and Chellie Pingree. Others have pursued studies in South Africa, England, Germany, Jordan, and Egypt through our Global Education Program, and others have represented UNE at the Model United Nations in New York City, and in mock trial competitions.

UNE Political Science students participate in the Model United Nations in New York.

If you are a Political Science major with a general concentration, you must complete a 3-credit internship. And no matter your concentration you must work with a faculty member to research and write a senior thesis

Internships are initiated under the guidance of a school faculty member and facilitated by the College of Arts and Sciences Internship Office. As an intern, you work under the joint supervision of a site supervisor and faculty sponsor.

Professor Ali Ahmida consults with a student on her senior thesis. Professor Ahmida is an expert on North Africa and is often interviewed by the national media on the aftermath of the Libyan revolution. He has also been asked to consult with the United Nations Security Council on North African issues.

Global Opportunities

Political Science program faculty members work closely with UNE’s Global Education Program to create unique experiences for Political Science majors. The semester-long options include programs in Seville, Spain, and Tangier, Morocco. At these sites, you might take classes in politics, history, and the culture of the region—satisfying your College of Arts and Sciences core requirements—with all coursework conducted in English. The tuition and fees for a semester in Spain or Morocco are the same as in Maine, and financial aid and scholarships apply.

In addition to the opportunities in Spain and Morocco, you may partake in faculty-led trips of shorter duration to other countries around the globe. Recent Political Science majors have traveled to places like Jordan, South Africa, England, and Germany. Consult with your advisor, or visit the Global Education Program to discuss the countries of interest to you.
