There are two categories of assessment — formative and summative. Traditionally, we think about summative assessments — those that will provide a score or grade that will be figured into the final record of a student’s achievement. However, formative assessments are just as important and are a key part of the learning process. These assessments are used while teaching to foster student engagement and provide feedback to you and the students. They allow your students to see how well they are progressing toward learning goals and help you identify areas of strength and weakness in your students and helps to inform your teaching and students learning. Generally, formative assessments are not translated into a grade, although they may comprise a portion of a student's participation grade.
