LGBT Athletes and Allies
In 2000 Brian Sims, a Division II, regional All-American football player and team captain became the only openly gay college football captain in NCAA history and one of the most notable college players to ever come out. Today he travels to schools around the country speaking about his experiences.
Mr. Sims is the President of the Board of Directors of Equality Pennsylvania, a statewide gay rights advocacy organization, and he’s a member of the GLSEN Sports Advisory Council. He also serves as the Chairman of the Gay & Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia and is a member of the National Campaign Board of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. He lectures regularly about the policy and legal challenges facing the LGBT civil rights movement. He is also a regular instructor at the Center for Progressive Leadership. He has appeared on, KYW, NPR’s “Radio Times” and World Football Daily and has been profiled at OutSports, The Washington Times, ESPN, Gay.com, The Philadelphia Gay News, Compete Magazine, Philadelphia Weekly and The Daily Local News.
He is a regular contributor to The Advocate Magazine and has written for The National Jurist, The New Jersey Law Journal, The Legal Intelligencer, Law.com, The Philadelphia Bar Reporter, M.D News Magazine, HRC Back Story, OutSports.com, Yahoo Sports, and Compete Magazine.
