Award-winning actress and playwright Qurrat Ann Kadwani will perform her thirteen-character, one-woman show. Indian parents, Caucasian teachers, Puerto Rican classmates, African-American friends and more illustrate the struggles for identity and self-understanding that are experienced by immigrants of all nationalities.

Student Learning Outcomes:  At the conclusion of the one-hour performance and audience talkback, participants will be able to

  • Develop greater understanding and empathy for conflicting feelings of identity, belonging and acceptance experienced by teens from different ethnic identities trying to fit in "American" culture.
  • Explore how language including mispronunciation of names, stereotypical labels or ethnic slurs, can have intended or unintended impact on individuals.
  • Critically analyze ways in which individuals from different ethnic backgrounds may feel  included and welcomed or excluded and shunned based on verbal and non-verbal cues.

The theme for this series is Intercultural Competence, exploring concepts of cultural awareness, cultural humility, and collaboration across diverse groups including health professionals. Attendees will learn from local and national experts and have the opportunity to follow up these events with service learning, small group and classroom activities.
