Barbara J. Kamm MSW ’91 Scholarships

The recipients of these scholarships are certain to help touch the lives of thousands of patients. It is amazing to think about how one gift can create a thousand ripples of support and potential in this world. No one can do it alone. We all need the support of those we love and sometimes from those miracle strangers!

UNE alumna Barbara J. Kamm MSW '91 passed away in 2006 but her legacy lives on. Her husband, Christian S. Hosford established two annual fund scholarships and one endowed scholarship at UNE in her honor.

Barbara was born in Ilion, N.Y. She graduated from Catholic University of America and the University of New England. She had a distinguished career in the fields of adoption case work, medicine and counseling. Barbara also proudly served in the United States Armed Forces and was a Bethesda Navy Hospital Nurse for many years. She cherished many longlasting friendships throughout her career.

Clay Graybeal, Westbrook College of Health Professions Dean and Social Work professor, recounted his memories of Barbara: "Barbara was part of the second graduating MSW class. At the grad party held at my house, we had a bonfire where each student ceremonially threw a log in, and I remember Barbara's joy when she called out 'Barbara Kamm, MSW!' She was a wonderful student, highly motivated, caring - a good role model for others. She adopted three Korean children, and was a great advocate for diversity and social action. With her wonderful combination of nursing and social work skills, Barbara was a tribute to interdisciplinarity."
