The Art Gallery on the University of New England’s Portland Campus is currently showing an exhibition titled “Portraits of the Artist.” Curated by Stephen Halpert, the exhibition will run through February 7, 2016.

This exhibition includes formal portraits (such as James Joyce by Berenice Abbott) and advertising posters (such as Todd Webb’s photo of an Edith Piaf poster on a wall in Paris) in addition to other portraits of artists of all kinds -- actors, musicians, writers, poets, playwrights, composers, visual artists, filmmakers.  The images are classic and contemporary, local, national and global in stature.

There are 110 subjects including a number from the University of New England’s Permanent Collection – Robert Frost, Berenice Abbott, Lotte Jacobi, May Sarton and Edna St. Vincent Millay among them.  Works by 35 photographers are featured, many from the UNE Collection, such as Danny Lyon, Stuart Nudelman, Verner Reed, Jan Pieter Van Voorst Van Beest and Todd Webb.

This exhibition is part of a year-long state-wide collaboration, the Maine Photo Project, supported in part by the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Office of Tourism.

The Art Gallery will also host an educational program related to the exhibition on December 10, 2015, 5-6:30 p.m. and again on January 14, 2016, 5-6:30 p.m. Titled “The Artist and the Artist,”  the program will be moderated by Halpert and Art Gallery Director Anne Zill.

The exhibition and educational programs are all free and open to the public.

The UNE Art Gallery is located on UNE's Portland Campus at 716 Stevens Avenue, Portland, Maine 04103. Art Gallery Hours are Wed, Fri, Sat & Sun, 1-4 p.m., Thurs until 7 p.m. and by appointment.
