I am an Assistant Professor in Environmental Studies. As an interdisciplinary social scientist, I am interested broadly in the human dimensions of climate change. My research focuses on the interactions between science and society, with a particular interest in the co-production of knowledge to inform climate change decision-making, planning, and policy. My work has also investigated relationships between drought response and climate change adaptation, including how these shape long-term adaptive capacities and vulnerabilities. I am also a member of the Media and Climate Change Observatory, which monitors and analyzes trends in global coverage and communication about climate change in the media. I have carried out research in East and Southern Africa, South Asia, Europe, and the U.S.

My teaching interests include climate change adaptation, science policy, science and technology studies, political ecology, and social science methods. I currently teach Introduction to Environmental Issues, Environment & Society: A Global Perspective, Climate Change Adaptation: Planning & Policy, and Communicating Climate Change. 

Before joining the Department of Environmental Studies, I was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy at the University of Leeds in England. I was previously a Research Fellow at the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO) in Oslo, Norway. I received a B.A. in Environmental Science from Colorado College, an M.A. in Climate and Society from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Current research

Within a broad focus on the human dimensions of climate change, my research emphasizes three main streams:

  1. the production of 'usable' knowledge for climate change decision-making, including through collaborative processes of co-production among scientists and stakeholders
  2. adaptive capacities and the dynamics of vulnerability within socio-ecological systems
  3. trends in media coverage and science communication about climate change 

My most recent project, Climate Change, Livelihoods, and Aquaculture in Maine (CLAM), examines the intersections of climate change, adaptation, and the aquaculture sector in Maine. In its first phase, the project seeks to understand how climate risks are perceived among aquaculture operators, regulators, and researchers, including how this shapes and informs practical management strategies to reduce social, cultural, economic, and ecological risks and vulnerabilities.
