UNE's Dental Careers Exploration Camp garners local media coverage

The University of New England’s fourth annual “Dental Careers Exploration Camp” was the subject of a story on WCSH-6 TV’s local news broadcast Monday night, August 4, 2014. The camp was also the subject of an article in the Tuesday, August 5, 2014 edition of the Portland Press Herald.

The three-day camp for high school students interested in pursuing careers in dentistry and dental hygiene was held at UNE’s Oral Health Center on the Portland Campus.

The experiential program allowed 14 students from across Maine to utilize UNE’s 64-seat simulation center, trying their hands at such procedures as restorations and digital X-ray, suturing, dental impressions, pouring and trimming.

Both stories highlighted Maine’s shortage of dentists, particularly in rural communities, and cited the camp as one program through which the UNE College of Dental Medicine is working to address the problem.
