Maine Concussion Management Initiative

The Maine Concussion Management Initiative (MCMI) is a pioneer in concussion research and education outreach. We launched our program in 2009 with a mission to increase awareness about concussions among athletes, coaches, parents, and school administrators. This project has been implemented in more than 100 Maine high schools and the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Essential to the success of MCMI is its relationship with the University of New England. UNE’s 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students come from very diverse backgrounds and take advantage of a curriculum that encourages educational exploration, collaborative learning experiences, and ground-breaking research. MCMI offers research opportunities that have helped guide students toward careers in science and medicine and we are proud to play a role in UNE’s STEM curriculum.

Key MCMI partners include the Maine Athletic Trainers Association, the Maine Principals Association, the Maine Medical Association, Orthopedic Associates, the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, and the Maine School Nurses Association.

The success of the MCMI model and the data collected has led to partnerships with institutions across the country including Boston Children’s Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and the University of Colorado at Denver.
