Dr. Robert Lenox, distinguished psychiatrist and neuroscientist, joins UNE faculty
The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) and the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences (CEN) are pleased to announce that Robert Lenox, M.D., has been appointed professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Biomedical Sciences.
He will be working closely with the basic science and clinical faculty to further develop translational research in the neurosciences.
CEN Director Ed Bilsky states, "Having senior-level clinician scientists such as Dr. Lenox will not only provide unique perspectives on particular research projects, but also will help immensely in mentoring the new group of junior and mid-level scientists who have been recruited to the university over the past several years." Bilsky adds, "Dr. Lenox will help facilitate collaborations with outside partners, including Maine Medical Center and its research institute, as well as biotechnology companies in Maine."
Dr. Lenox is currently providing central nervous system (CNS) drug discovery and development consultation to academia, biotech and venture capital companies. Until recently, he served as vice president and worldwide head of CNS drug discovery for Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals, with responsibilities for setting strategy and leading CNS drug discovery from target identification, lead discovery and candidate profiling and oversight for preclinical, phase I and phase II development at Aventis for all psychiatry and neurology programs.
Dr. Lenox has a distinguished academic research and teaching career spanning 25 years. He is an internationally renowned psychiatrist and neuroscientist who held continuous NIH grant funding, and has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, as well as numerous reviews and book chapters, in the fields of molecular neuropharmacology and clinical psychopharmacology. He is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards and honors that recognize his contributions to medicine, including the NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Award, Life Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, and Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Prior to entering the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Lenox held an endowed tenured faculty position as the Karl and Linda Rickels Professor of Psychiatry, Pharmacology and Neuroscience and vice chairman for research development in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Lenox was also former founder and head of neuroscience research and clinical psychopharmacology in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, where he also served as interim-chairman.
Dr. Lenox holds a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry from MIT, a medical degree from University of Vermont College of Medicine and a master of arts (Honors) from University of Pennsylvania.
