Barry Costa-Pierce co-authors article to be featured in ‘Coastal and Estuarine Science News’

Barry Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., FAAAS, Henry L. & Grace Doherty Professor and chair in the Department of Marine Sciences and director of the Marine Science Center, co-authored an article that will be featured in the electronic newsletter of the Coastal Estuarine Research Federation, Coastal and Estuarine Science News, a publication designed for coastal management community members who have a need and interest in knowing about recent scientific results.

The article, “Managing bay and estuarine ecosystems for multiple services,” discusses the creation of a management action-ecosystem services matrix for assessing tradeoffs, which assigns positive and negative values to the effects of various management actions on a range of ecosystem services.  The matrix allows patterns to be observed; for example, making it apparent when a management action had multiple positive effects, or a positive impact on one ecosystem service but negative impacts on others.
