Lara Carlson presents at American College of Sports Medicine event; research featured on WCSH6 TV

Lara Carlson, Ph.D., CSCS, FACSM, assistant professor of applied exercise science, was invited to speak at the 60th Annual Meeting and 4th World Congress on Exercise in Medicine of the American College of Sports Medicine, which was held in Indianapolis, May 28-June 1, 2013.

Carlson co-presented a colloquium concerning strength and conditioning and motorsports athletes with Jim Leo, CSCS, founder and president of PitFit Training. Leo, who formally worked for Indycar legend Roger Penske, works with several drivers and pit crews in NASCAR, NHRA, Grand Am, and IndyCar series.

Carlson also presented her research titled "Influence of Flo-Dynamics Intervention on Measures of Performance in Older Persons.” The research was published as an abstract in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise (MSSE), Volume 45:5 Supplement 2013.

Carlson was interviewed for a March 19, 2012, story on WCSH6 TV about this study of a new fitness product. She evaluated a group of 15 senior citizens from southern Maine as part of an eight-week study on fall prevention for the elderly. The seniors participated in a fitness routine using a new product called Wun-Jo, with the Flo Dynamics System developed by Scarborough-based health therapist Ron Lemire. Assisting in the research was Michael Lawrence, M.S., UNE Biomechanics Laboratory manager.
